Walser House Museum – Macugnaga

The Walser House Museum in Borca, a hamlet of Macugnaga, was built in 1982 with the aim of collecting, cataloguing and preserving the everyday objects of the Walser Germanic population, which played a very important role in the Anzasca Valley.
The finds that make up the collection of the Walser House Museum in Macugnaga were almost entirely donated by locals. Over the centuries, the house, dating back to 1600, has not undergone structural changes and for this reason is perhaps the best example of Walser architecture in Macugnaga.
The Walser House Museum exhibits over 650 finds, dating from 1300 to 1900, and the collection is spread over three floors. The basement is the thematic room, which houses a permanent collection of reproduction of ancient prints and photographs and hosts temporary exhibitions.
The ground floor is composed of three rooms: the fireplace-kitchen, where objects necessary for the preparation of food are collected; the crossroads room, the old entrance, where objects of daily life and work tools are displayed; and finally the stobu, the room par excellence, the most elaborate and important room in the house, a refined wooden environment.
The top floor is made up of three rooms: a room dedicated to traditional crafts, a room that houses objects for bread making and a documentary room, which houses Mining Association documents as well as objects of particular value.
The Walsers knew how to design and create valuable tools and supports for their daily work: the main material was larch wood, which was carved, sculpted and turned with great skill.
The testimonies of these wonders of the past combined with the magical place that houses them are truly an invaluable slice of history for you to learn about on your holiday in Macugnaga, the Walser village at the foot of Monte Rosa.
