The Meitza Lauf (‘running in snowshoes‘, in ancient Walser language), is a spectacular, non-competitive snowshoe walk that was first held in 2006, in the breathtaking natural setting in the high slopes of the Formazza Valley, in Riale.
The seven-kilometre hike starts from the “Centro del Fondo”, and takes walkers through stunning landscapes; with the Walser dwelling in Riale behind it, the snaking trail of hundreds of snowshoe hikers heads up towards the Morasco dam and beyond to reach the Furculti plains. After reaching the highest point of the route, the Meitza Lauf treats walkers to a thrilling descent towards the Frua plain, to take them back again to the starting point in Riale.
Together with the Traccia Bianca in Alpe Devero, the Meitza Lauf is an absolute must for nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts, and is one of the best-known winter sporting events across local borders.
