Pontemaglio, Veglio with the Castello dei Picchi, the staircase that leads to the plateau of the great Alagua alpine pasture: places steeped in history, access points to the border valleys and the centuries-old trade in goods…
The Alagua alpine pasture, besides being a large pasture, is also a remarkably beautiful panoramic terrace, with open views of the Toce River plain and the Antigorio Valley. The connection with Giovera and Coipo along the trail from Altoggio, a hamlet of Montecrestese, has allowed the mountain pastures at the entrance of the Isorno Valley to be used, including Alagua, which, with its beautifully restored huts, is very welcoming.

Description

From the bus stop in Pontemaglio, cross the wonderful arched bridge, cross the village and take the A02 route, which climbs steeply up to the village of Veglio. From here a path starts – sometimes with steps – up to the first houses of Alagua. Continue on the plateau, turning left for the pond and towards the viewpoints over the plain below. From the centre of the mountain pasture a path starts that crosses the trail; take it until it meets the path to Giovera. You’ll find yourself in Coipo, along the ridge that descends from Monte Larone: alternating the trail with the footpath, you’ll descend to the Oratory of the Madonna di San Luca, passing by the Cappella dei Genovesi chapel and from here you’ll get to Altoggio. After visiting the village, take a road that starts just above the last houses and allows you to reach Alpe Grioppallo and the Cappella di Scarpia chapel. Go down the beautiful mule track that cuts across a trail to cross the G00a variant of the Via del Gries and along this return to Pontemaglio.
