Hiking – Vogogna and la Rocca
Difficulty
Easy
Period
Spring / Autumn

Vogogna is the best preserved mediaeval village in Val d’Ossola. Its recovery has highlighted architectural aspects of the Visconti castle of great value, but not just that. The beauty of this Orange Flag Village of the Italian Touring Club is revealed as you explore Pretorio Palace, its churches and ancient houses, the picturesque structure of the village and the ancient fortress.

Description

From the bus stop in Dresio (for those who choose to reach Vogogna by public transport) take Via San Pietro and you’ll arrive at the church of San Pietro dating back to 1276, on whose parvis you can see a beautiful fountain with a Celtic mask. Continuing along a lane, you arrive on the provincial road in front of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, continue on the pavement until you get to Piazza San Carlo and then take Via De Regibus to the parish church dating back to 1896. Take Vicolo della Motta and Vicolo Sotto le Mura. At the crossroads with Via Teatro, take Via Sopra le Mura as far as Casa Losetti. In Piazza Marconi, take the road that leads to the centre of the village, to Pretorio Palace, then take Via Roma as far as Via San Martino, which leads to the Visconti Castle. From the Castle of Vogogna, take the mule track that goes up to Genestredo along the Nature Trail of the Val Grande National Park and turn right for la Rocca. Returning to Genestredo, you can stop at the café bar for a tasty snack, then climb to the church of San Martino and from here, along the paved road, reach the Oratory of San Zenone. Then descend to Giavinello and from here, along a path, you return to Piazza San Carlo. Back towards the village and in the church square, go down towards the provincial road from which you started.
