Ex-voto Museum in Re

The Museum of the Sanctuary of Re, in Vigezzo Valley, houses an important collection of ex-voto, small handmade or artistic pieces made as a sign of devotion and gratitude to the Madonna for the grace received.
Once upon a time the walls of the Sanctuary of Re were completely covered with them, testimony to the great popular devotion to the Madonna. Today, a total of 465 ex-voto offerings are housed in the museum, as well as a large number of hearts, embroideries and photographs.
Some of the works on display were created by famous popular painters specialised in this type of work, but all the ex-voto have great historical and emotional value: through the scenes represented, you can reconstruct elements and details dating back to the period of their construction.
At the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sangue in Re, a picture is preserved containing a golden heart votive offered to the Madonna in 1898 by the parents of some children affected by a deadly diphtheria epidemic. Relying on their devotion to Our Lady, they achieved the miracle of ending the infection. The golden heart is still carried in procession by the village children on the second Sunday of October each year, in memory of that prodigious healing.
