Medieval Tower of Varzo

The Medieval Tower of Varzo, in the Divedro Valley, is a massive granite building located next to the Town Hall, in the heart of the old town. For centuries it was an important lookout post and signalling point in communication with other towers scattered throughout the Ossola region; in the 14th century it was also a refreshment point for riders who transported goods over the Simplon Pass.
The Medieval Tower of Varzo has an entrance door and a window with white marble jambs from Crevoladossola, which bear two Latin inscriptions “Peace to this house and its inhabitants” and “The prestigious gentleman Gian Giacomo della Torre, notary and surgeon of Varzo, in 1582 erected this tower so that all those who use his work could remember him.”
Restored and returned to its former glory, it’s now used as a venue for art exhibitions, conferences and cultural events.
