The Museo dei Latticini (Museum of Dairy Products) in Beura is housed in the premises of Beura’s old Dairy Cooperative. The tools of the trade and some printed documents illustrate the history of processing of milk during last century: the Dairy Cooperative dates from April 1926 and was an important reference point for local families, who found here the ideal place for producing their own cheeses.
Beura’s Museum of Dairy Products is divided into three exhibition rooms and covers all the processes of this ancient and contemporary trade: from processing of the milk to maturing of the cheese, up to sale and storage. The cheese press, the vat, the stone drainer, the stove and other implements accompany visitors as far as the maturing cellar with its very fine shelving made entirely of Beola, a local stone. Then you can visit the room where milk was sold, where all the dairy products were stored and in which the old accounting books and old registers can still be seen, as well as the blackboard used to assign the products and equipment required for pressing butter.
It will be an authentic step back into the past to discover the former “cheesemakers”, whose tools and methods are not so very different from those still used today for cheesemaking in the Ossola Valley.
