Parish Church Sacro Cuore di Gesù – Vogogna

The Sacro Cuore di Gesù (Sacred Heart of Jesus) Parish Church in Vogogna is known as the Chiesa Nuova (New Church), to distinguish it historically from the Chiesa Vecchia (Old Church), which collapsed in October 1975.
Built against the mountain overlooking a cliff, from where it dominates the whole town of Vogogna, the church attracts the attention of travellers riding on the train through Ossola Valley: this religious building in fact rises majestic, 42 metres long and 20 metres wide.
Construction began in 1894 and was completed in ten years, while the interior decoration was begun in the autumn of 1912 and continued up to the end of 1913. Inside, the Parish Church of Vogogna has a nave and two side aisles supported by columns and the side aisles are enhanced by ten large niches. Another feature of the interior is a statue of the Sacro Cuore di Gesù, commissioned to a Milanese artist by the inhabitants of Vogogna, who covered the costs of its creation with their donations.
