Every year, as part of Christmas time celebrations, the Varzese Theatre Group puts on Presepe Meccanico Vivente – living ‘mechanical’ nativity scenes – in the old town centre of Varzo, in Divedro Valley. 40 performers simulate the mechanical, rhythmic and repetitive movements of a music box figurines, to the sound of a melodious tune.
The narrator takes the audience on a journey of stories, anecdotes and events related to this religious performance, with demonstrations of ancient crafts. At the end of each narrative section, the entire nativity scene comes to life with the performers’ movements, before performing the next scene.
Scenographies and costumes, which are made with love and passion by the theatre group, are the essential details of the staging for this open air, 3D nativity scene that recreates new settings every year, promising audience a purely magical experience.
