Traces of ancient rye and other grains cultivations are still clearly visible across the Ossola Valley mountains: every year in June, Montescheno, a small town in the Antrona Valley, pays homage to this rural tradition with the Sagra della Segale, or rye harvest festival.
Old mills, communal ovens and ancient press machines are the concrete evidence that remains of the traditions of bygone times, which are now gradually being re-discovered, thanks in part to the more authentic flavour of the Montescheno rye harvest festival, one of the events on the SagreOssola calendar. Every year, this valuable grain, which was once the main ingredient used to make bread, is commemorated and honoured in an event-packed programme organised by the town council and the Club Alpino Italiano.
