Palazzo Silva is one of the jewels preserved in Domodossola’s old town. It is among the most beautiful Renaissance noble buildings in the subalpine region and is included in the list of National Monuments.
Built in two stages, between the 14th and 17th centuries, the building was the residence of the aristocratic Della Silva family until the late-18th century. After the death of the family’s last descendant, the building gradually started to deteriorate. In 1882, it was bought by the Galletti Foundation: it was restored under the direction of painter Vittorio Avondo between 1884 and 1889 and was used as the site of the historical and artistic collections owned by the Foundation. This led to the establishment of the Palazzo Silva museum, which has been repeatedly reorganized and redesigned over the years. The definitive layout, devised between 1940 and 1950, recreated the rooms of a typical Ossola-style 17th-century aristocratic home.
Following the dissolution of the Galletti Foundation, in 1986 the Domodossola Town Council took over ownership of the property and its collections.
In 1996, the Domodossola Town Council began carrying out major restoration work, logically dividing the collections and identifying the pieces in the worst state so that they could be subsequently restored. In 2014, the restoration of the external façades was completed, returning them to their former splendour. Palazzo Silva is undoubtedly one of the finest monuments that lies within Domodossola’s town walls: alongside the building’s architectural structure and the furnishings in the various rooms, the 14th-century Serizzo granite spiral staircase, which connects all the floors of Palazzo Silva starting from the basement, deserves particular attention.
