A pleasant walking tour along characteristic paved mule tracks, in search of the old rural hamlets of Montecrestese: in this part of Ossola Valley it seems like going back in time to a long-ago age. The stone buildings give this landscape an almost enchanted atmosphere, accompanied by the soft vista over all of the Ossola Valley.
The circular itinerary suggested by Visit Ossola is suitable for everyone and winds through some of the numerous hamlets that make up the municipality of Montecrestese, scattered over altitudes between 310 and 720 metres: Pontetto, Roldo, Burella, Cardone, Giosio, Naviledo, Altoggio, Nava, Chiesa, Castelluccio and Piaggino. The total difference in altitude is 445 metres, along a distance of almost 9 kilometres, which can be covered at an easy pace in around 3 hours.
Some of these hamlets are now once again inhabited, thanks to renovation work carried out in the past few years, restoring the rural buildings to their former splendour. Almost all the hamlets are served by carriage roads, thus allowing for variations to the traditional walk. Along the picturesque mule tracks, surrounded by greenery in the chestnut woods, you will be able to encounter villas from long ago and cross exquisite little villages. Those who wish can make a stop along the way: in fact food and refreshments can be obtained in Pontetto, Roldo, Altoggio and Piaggino.
Each year, the grassroots organisation of Montecrestese organises a gourmet walking tour of the hamlets, a popular event that combines the pleasure of walking in the company of others with that of sampling excellent local food and wine.
