The Sbrinz Route is a historical route that runs for around 150 kilometres from the Swiss town of Lucerne, along the old mule tracks and through breathtaking landscapes, all the way to Domodossola, and can now be taken by hikers on their own.
Once travelled along by the Walser people, the Sbrinz Route was once used as a real trade route, particularly for food; the event was in fact named after Sbrinz, a hard, mature Swiss cheese.
Today, the Sbrinz Route is commemorated every August with a demonstration of a characteristic pack animal convoy that crosses over the Swiss border to reach the Ossola Valley; the first stop are the high slopes of the Formazza Valley, then Premia and Crodo (Antigorio Valley) and Crevoladossola, to eventually arrive in Domodossola’s historical Piazza Mercato, where it is given a warm welcome by locals and visitors alike.
The final stop along this route celebrates the ties of friendship and collaboration shared between the Alpine people of Italy and Switzerland; the meeting of cultures and warm feelings on both sides is celebrated to the backdrop of culinary specialities and enchanting mountain music.
