The Festa dello Scarghè (Festival of Transhumance, in local dialect), takes place every year at the end of summer and is one of the most traditional celebrations of the rural lifestyle in Val d’Ossola. Steeped in the sweet scent of hay and real life, the Festa dello Scarghè celebrates the descent of the cows from the alpine pastures and offers the opportunity to taste a wide range of local products while listening to accordion music.
The most captivating moment, especially for children, is the arrival of the herds, before they set out on their long descent down to the bottom of the valley. On the occasion of the Festa dello Scarghè, farmers gather for the traditional branding of the famous alpine Bettelmatt cheese wheels, a gourmet delicacy made at the high altitudes of the Antigorio and Formazza Valleys.
