Diary Museum in Vanzone

The “Latteria Turnaria” (a type of cooperative dairy) Museum in Vanzone con San Carlo, in the Anzasca Valley, was born in 2002 with the restructuring of the premises to accommodate the tools used in the past to process milk and cheese. The date of construction of the first cooperative dairy in the town of Vanzone con San Carlo is not known, but it’s probable that it already existed before 1920.
In 1934, new equipment was purchased, an unmistakable sign of the increase in the number of members and therefore of the production in the village’s dairy. Equipped with drinking water and an electrical system, the cooperative dairy in Vanzone became a model, “setting an example” for other villages and valleys in Ossola.
During the Second World War, the dairy was temporarily closed and it then came back into operation and reached historic levels of production in 1950, with over 50,000 kilograms (110,231 lbs) of milk produced by around 70 members. Production remained at high levels until 1957 and then it gradually decreased in subsequent years. Today, the Latteria Turnaria Museum in Vanzone con San Carlo plays testimony to the valuable art of milk production, which was once part of the daily effort to survive and an essential social bonding activity in the village.
